The Changing Room

10" x 4" pencil on paper 2013
The place where we dress or try on new clothes is often fraught with more feelings than other rooms. This little piece started as a simple attempt to play with the proportions of my model Lilia...I was trying to expand her hips into Venus of Willendorf size but didn't manage to do it smoothly. The choppy edges got to be inspiring in themselves and I liked how it seemed that her middle was worn externally, like a big pair of shorts. I've heard from a couple of people that it reminds them of their own issues of self-image and the exaggerations a lot of us assume about certain parts of our appearances.
